It meant so much to my daughter to connect immediately and relate to Elaine, establishing that trust right away.
My 13 yr old loves to dance-- jazz, ballet, contemporary, and en pointe. She fractured her femur when she hit a tree skiing. We ended up in Primary Children's RTU. She was devastated wondering how bad her injury was and if she'll ever get to dance again. Our night shift nurse, Elaine was amazing! She started off right away telling my daughter that she herself danced for the New Zealand Ballet Company when she was younger. It meant so much to my daughter to connect immediately and relate to Elaine, establishing that trust right away. Elaine went on to tell her that 3 years ago she had hip surgery and now can do more things than before her surgery. She reassured her that everything will go smoothly. Elaine treated us as well as if we were family. She went above and beyond to get us anything and everything to make us comfortable-- toothbrushes, toothpaste, timely pain med administration, ice packs, extra pillows, and even hair elastics at the end of her long shift! The DAISY Award was created just for nurses like Elaine. She made a HUGE difference in making a scary situation easier for my daughter. Thank you, Elaine!! (And we LOVE her New Zealand accent. We could've talked to her all day!!)
