From the pre-op evaluation to the pre-surgical care and preparation and final the post op care Elena Chance was always there for my dad. Elena did all the expected things when caring for my dad but she exceeded all the care requirements in several areas.

Elena’s constant loving care and attention to detail made the surgical experience unique for both my dad and other family members. Elena kept my dad up to date on anything she was doing or changing. She included family in as much of the care routine as she could and then when I brought my mom to see my dad for the first time in the afternoon she made sure my dad looked the best he could so my mom would feel secure in the short time she had to spend for the visit. She explained all the care my dad had received and what to expect next patiently and kindly to my mom so she knew exactly what was going on and so she would be part of that care even though she could only stay a short time.

At dinner she made special arrangements to get different food that my dad requested as he did not feel he could eat an entire meal and only wanted some soup and a sandwich. She never rushed him to do anything. She let him set the pace and was anticipatory of all his care needs.

The next day on discharge dad was up eating breakfast on my arrival and so pleased to have Elena again as his nurse. She kept his spirits high and offered a peace of mind that only extraordinary DAISY nurses can deliver. She listened to his humor and made him feel special.

Everyone in the CVICU is exceptional. The teamwork and compassion I saw were evident to all but Elena is a true leader in that unit and delivers the highest level of care to everyone she is assigned to. She is a true DAISY nurse.
