Elena came to work and gave reassurance to the patient that they would take her little friend and care for him until the patient was able to resume her responsibilities.
Elena is a critical part of the PICC team and will always be that one person to take on any issue regardless of how complicated it is. However, there was a specific day when they rose to the Baylor challenge that many of us face in these difficult days of economic crisis. It's a day that impacted a very special patient, as well as her "fur baby" a pet chihuahua by the name of Tiny. We frequently have patients who are homeless, they come into our facility looking for help, treatment, and special accommodations that we so often struggle to provide to our homeless population. This patient had already made it clear that she would leave the hospital and discontinue her treatment if her dog were to be placed in an animal shelter for fear it would lead to euthanasia. This issue is something that we all felt heartsick about, we looked for any way to resolve this problem for this patient. Social work became involved, and administration was made aware, but with no solution, it looked grim for this little that weighed less than 2 lb. The final solution was for one of our own to step up and take on the role of hero for this patient and her littlest companion. Elena came to work and gave reassurance to the patient that they would take her little friend and care for him until the patient was able to resume her responsibilities. This action represents the absolute commitment that many Baylor employees have to the community that we strive to care for. Patient care always includes family members such as a little chihuahua. Thank you, Elena, for always being that person that would care for the smallest member of our community.
