Elena was recognized for going above and beyond for a patient who happened to be in our ER on his birthday.
The patient was very sick and had a significant medical history.
To brighten this patient's day, Elena took the time to purchase balloons from the gift shop and ordered a special meal and dessert in honor of his birthday.
When the patient was finally able to eat, Elena gathered her colleagues to present the gifts and sing "Happy Birthday" to the patient.
I was impressed with the amount of compassion and empathy she showed. Elena really looked at this patient as a fellow human being and did something special and personal for him in an otherwise unpleasant situation.
