Eliana went far above and beyond to connect with the patient and help aid his physical and psychological health, well-being, and recovery.
Eliana is a highly invested and dedicated Professional Practice Specialist for the Surgical Care Unit (SCU) and she clearly stands out as a leader who is passionate, driven, and devoted to the success of every team member on SCU. She is equally committed to every patient/family on SCU and as an Educator, she provides the SCU nursing team with ample education, tools, and preparation to deliver exemplary nursing care to a notably complex patient population. Particularly in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Eliana has pivoted her focus towards the Special Isolation Unit (SIU) within SCU to ensure safety and quality measures and metrics are not only maintained but surpass expectations. Furthermore, she has tirelessly supported and encouraged the SCU nursing team and specifically is a tremendous advocate for new hires and preceptors. She readily recognizes the immense responsibility that each employee has and balances her approach by offering alternate learning styles and innovative techniques to engage every team member. Aside from her numerous contributions and talents, Eliana truly shines as a valued, resourceful, and endlessly-helpful Educator who consistently excels in every facet of her role.

In addition to her exemplary practice, Eliana is also incredibly impactful at the bedside. As an example, Eliana was highly instrumental in the plan of care for a 14-year-old burn victim. Tragically, the patient suffered burns to 40% of his TBSA from a down power line. The extent of his physiological and psychological injuries was extensive, and he struggled with depression, PTSD, self-image, and debilitating pain. Due to his mother's own Illness and disability, she was not able to visit regularly, and he relied heavily upon the nursing staff to bridge the gap with unconditional emotional support, interactions, and AOLs. Of note, showering the patient as part of his burn care routine was a high-intensity event that caused him a great deal of anxiety, emotional distress, and pain. Recognizing this, Eliana sprang into action by delineating and outlining a clear plan for the patient's shower that included pain management, relaxation techniques, and team support. She willingly came in on the weekends so that his shower could be accomplished as efficiently as possible. She often brought him home-cooked meals that she knew he would enjoy and played his favorite music to help him relax after showering. Eliana went far above and beyond to connect with the patient and help aid his physical and psychological health, well-being, and recovery. She significantly contributed to the best possible outcome for him as he was subsequently discharged and is doing well from all accounts.

Undoubtedly, Eliana is a tremendous asset to Children's National and I believe she should be readily recognized for her immense contribution with The DAISY Nurse Leader Award. Thank you!
