“During recovery from a total hip replacement surgery, I had a particularly difficult night. When Elijah Valeros entered my room as my Nurse for the day, he immediately sensed something was bothering me. He asked in a gentle voice if I was okay, and when I replied that I wasn’t, he came around to the side of the bed, pulled up a chair, reached and took my hand, and asked me to tell him more. This simple and kind gesture immediately brought me to tears. I explained what had me so upset, and he listened intently, with caring and compassion. He promised he would do what was possible to ensure I had a good day and to not repeat my experience from the night before. The kindness, gentleness, empathy, and compassion Elijah showed me that day exemplified what nursing should be, and especially for such a young professional - his approach immediately turned my day around. Throughout the next two days, he continued to demonstrate the same level of caring and depth of character, and I felt that those working with him mirrored and reflected his kindness toward me. I still get tears of appreciation when I think of Elijah and the gentleness and connection he shared that day. He is a remarkable human being and indeed an extraordinary nurse.”
