Although Elise was the charge nurse and not the nurse assigned to care for this patient, she elected to remain by her side throughout the delivery, providing the most supportive and compassionate care during an extremely emotionally charged and stressful experience.
I am writing this DAISY nomination to recognize Elise Sauder for the extraordinary care she provided to a patient in need. Elise was the charge nurse the night a patient was discovered to have sadly suffered a fetal demise at 26 weeks into her pregnancy. An induction was initiated and this patient delivered her baby right at the change of shift.
Although Elise was the charge nurse and not the nurse assigned to care for this patient, she elected to remain by her side throughout the delivery, providing the most supportive and compassionate care during an extremely emotionally charged and stressful experience. Elise carefully and tenderly prepared the family for what to expect both prior to and during the delivery. Once the baby was delivered, Elise provided quiet strength as she supported the family while they navigated their emotions and choices in handling this emotional experience.
Additionally, Elise stayed well after her shift was over in order to provide the most loving care for this precious baby, including making keepsakes for the family. While Elise could have left when her shift was over, especially since this was not her patient, she went above and beyond in providing the most extraordinary care by ensuring the patient felt supported by a familiar face during her most difficult hour.
Elise also supported her peers by tackling this delivery herself rather than requesting one of her oncoming colleagues to take over. While Elise's actions are incredibly admirable on their own accord, given the fact that Elise handled an incredibly tragic and traumatic event on the unit just a few mere weeks prior, the care she provided to this family is even more remarkable. As a colleague looking into the situation, I am blown away by her dedication to our patients. As a person who has also suffered through loss, I am touched by Elise's compassion and selflessness in this situation. I do not know that the family even realizes the gift Elise was to them during that sad time. She was 100% everything they didn't know they needed but deserved to have and she wasn't there because she had to be, she was there because she wanted to be. Elise's treatment of this family was not for recognition; her actions were motivated by her love for her job and her patients and I am so honored to work with and learn from such an incredible nurse.
