When my husband was admitted to Passavant for emergency abdominal surgery back in September, we were not sure what to expect next.

With complicating health factors, his post-surgery care included an ICU stay and a complex, painful system of tubes, IVs, and other devices to aid in his recovery.

During this overwhelming time, Elizabeth Bell proved to be an exceptional nurse when she took over my husband’s care on the 6th floor. Elizabeth not only tended deftly to all his medical needs and accommodations (such as moving his IV from one arm to the other to reduce pain), but she also took the time to listen and explain answers to all our questions.

She showed patience, diligence, and compassion when we needed it most. Most significantly, when I had a concern about my husband’s slightly slurred speech post-surgery, Elizabeth validated my concerns by assessing him and referring him to a hospitalist for further evaluation. As I watched Elizabeth throughout the day, she reminded me in some ways of my own mom, who served in the Cadet Nursing Corps during World War II.

Elizabeth showed in all her work and care what it truly means to be a nurse, in the fullest and best sense of the word.
