My son J is non-verbal, severely developmentally delayed, and fraught with numerous medical issues. J has had many hospitalizations in his lifetime, but he's never had the compassionate care RN Elizabeth (Liz) provided him when he encountered a sudden medical crisis. She was a calming influence on J and me, and she took the time to explain things to me. It was a busy night, which delayed the Hospitalist from meeting with me, yet Liz continued to give me updates until the Hospitalist was able to arrive at his room. As our long night turned into the next morning, and with us residing out of town, I was apprehensive about leaving J's bedside as he requires a special safety bed for his safety during hospitalizations. Liz encouraged me to go home and get rest, but most importantly, she gave me believable assurance she would watch over him. As a parent of a disabled loved one, that is a massive, massive relief. His safety bed did not arrive until the next morning; however, she made every attempt to be in his room or have someone watching over him when she couldn't to ensure his safety and my peace of mind during the overnight. Her care didn't stop there. She wasn't technically assigned to him the next night, yet she took the time to "check in on us." She even got me a more comfortable chair as it was another long day for me. Unbelievable!
