Nurse, soldier, caring and compassionate professional, crazy person who jumps out of planes, smart, competent, loyal friend, leader, mentor and study buddy,.....all these words are not enough to describe this remarkable young woman. This summer, she was selected for a competitive summer internship with the Army Nurse Corps. The most prized assignment is Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany. Of course, that is where Liz was stationed. While there, she worked the night shift in the Intensive Care Unit, comforting and caring for our wounded soldiers directly off a transport plane from the battlefields of Afghanistan. She texted me one night during her shift to tell me about an extraordinary soldier to whom she was providing care. Amidst all the lines and tubes and critically wounded bodies, she had found the time to just sit with the patient and hold his hand, giving comfort with her presence and her humanity. She had figured out that, as a professional nurse, the most effective treatment she can deliver is the amazing gift of self. She embodies the STTI model of service, scholarship and leadership, and it is my professional honor and personal pleasure to nominate her for the DAISY-In-Training Award.
