That evening, Elizabeth spent nearly and hour of her own personal time after hours to spend with my aunt and some of the family in her room at the time.
My aunt had been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer a few weeks prior to being admitted into CHI. She was initially admitted due to vomiting blood after the installation of a J Tube. My aunt showed symptoms of many underlying concerns. A battery of tests were ordered, and the nurses came and went for days. Elizabeth really stood out above the rest. Even when her unit was overloaded and understaffed, the attention and affection that Elizabeth shared were quite admirable. She really went out of her way to help ensure my aunt was kept as comfortable as she could possibly control.
Elizabeth was found holding my aunt's hand on many occasions and sharing stories to help the pair of them smile through some of the rough prognoses. My aunt was discharged after a 9-day stay. A few days later, unfortunately, I ended up right back at St. Elizabeth with some new complications. Elizabeth was all smiles and jokes when she saw my aunt's name on her list of patients. She immediately had to join her in her room and catch up! That evening, Elizabeth spent nearly and hour of her own personal time after hours to spend with my aunt and some of the family in her room at the time. Elizabeth spent much of this time bedside with my aunt, hand in hand, sharing stories. Ultimately, the care and compassion that Elizabeth shared each and every day she had with my aunt was remarkable. After the first discharge from CHI, my aunt landed in a small town hospital, and during much of that stay, she reminisced on the care and compassion Elizabeth had shared with her previously. Elizabeth, Elizabeth's family, and Elizabeth's place of employment should be incredibly proud of the overall character that she has become!
