Izzy is a prime example of what a compassionate nurse and patient advocate looks like.

Izzy is a nurse who always speaks up when she is concerned and is always a strong advocate for her patients. I have reviewed care provided by Izzy on multiple occasions, and I am always impressed by her assessments, documentation, care planning, detailed knowledge of all patients she is assigned, and her ability to think quickly and critically at a moment's notice.

In 2022, a nurse identified a condition change in the mental status of one of her patients and promptly initiated a Rapid Response. Izzy responded and identified that a critical value had resulted on patient's labs on the previous shift and that no provider notification had been entered. The patient was immediately placed on BiPAP and transferred to ICU. Due to Izzy's detailed review of previous results in this high stress environment, the care the patient required was ordered immediately, while the patient and care team awaited the results of further testing related to the patient's condition change.

A few days later, Izzy was caring for a patient admitted with aspiration pneumonia. Izzy advocated for this patient's wishes, and their safety. While the patient had passed their bedside swallow study, Izzy had concerns that the patient aspirated their meal, and promptly notified the provider, advocating for a video swallow study, which was ordered. As the patient was made NPO, Izzy educated the patient multiple times regarding their risk of aspiration, provided frequent oral cares, and requested IV Fluids after identifying an upward trend in the patient's serum sodium.

Izzy also identified that the patient's code status did not align with the patient's wishes on their Advanced Directive. The patient had numerous wounds present on admission, and very fragile skin. Izzy thoroughly documented each wound and completed wound photographs. She implemented all available wound prevention interventions and requested additional equipment for wound prevention that she could not locate herself. Izzy was assigned to care for this patient from 0700-1900, yet her end of shift summary was entered after 2100-further indicating that she is a skilled, thorough, detailed, and extremely compassionate nurse by her willingness to work beyond her scheduled hours to ensure all care was provided, and documented.

Izzy is an excellent nurse and an asset to the organization. I am not a patient of this nurse, but a co-worker. Izzy is a prime example of what a compassionate nurse and patient advocate looks like. She places the patients best interest first and she will go out of her way to get what’s best for patient. As a co-worker she is always there offering to help and lending a hand. She is a perfect example of a DAISY nurse.
