Beth took the time to assess the patient and his family and communicate that assessment with the larger medical team in order to best meet his physical and psychological needs.
Beth was the epitome of the best that CHOP Nursing has to offer during a long and challenging shift in the GI suites. Beth was the perfect nurse for a young patient with autism who needed multiple invasive procedures as she spoke to him at his developmental level, was responsive to his cues, and tailored her care to his needs. When Beth demonstrated a temporal thermometer reading on a teaching doll, then let the patient practice taking a reading himself, she made taking his vital signs into an interactive experience instead of a frightening encounter.

She was exceedingly patient, calm, and kind not only with the patient and his family when he began to struggle with needed procedures, but also with all of her interdisciplinary co-workers throughout her entire shift. Beth took the time to assess the patient and his family and communicate that assessment with the larger medical team in order to best meet his physical and psychological needs. She was able to balance a number of conflicting priorities and a difficult patient care situation with professionalism and grace. As an interdisciplinary colleague, I was extremely appreciative of the time Beth took to repeatedly collaborate with me throughout the day. She made it possible for me to fulfill my role with the patient and family while also making me feel supported working in a new area of the hospital. I am extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to witness what a wonderful nurse Beth is.
