Many of the nurses who cared for our grandson during his eight day stay in the Palmetto Health Richland’s NICU exhibited the characteristics described as criteria for the DAISY Award. Nurse Liz Matney stood out form all the others charged with his care.
Technically her professionalism, compassion, display of integrity, dignity and selflessness were brilliant as were the skills of the other nurses. It was, however, Liz’s positive, open and welcoming spirit that set her apart. She cared for our grandson while seamlessly looking after the needs of our whole family. She engaged me and my daughter in conversation about the baby’s medical and physical needs. She encouraged a free exchange of ideas. She called for resources when necessary.
Most importantly, Liz recognized the challenges we faced while pointing out all the milestones our grandson had already accomplished. She brought hope to this tentative situation. She inspired positive thinking. She displayed confidence which in turn gave us confidence. Liz Matney embodies the excellence of an extraordinary nurse. She is a worthy recipient of the DAISY Award.
