She then said to me, “You know I always advocate for you guys. I know how hard you work.” This wasn’t lost on me; the fact that she recognized my frustration and listened to me. I believe that when she said that to me, she was talking about every staff member.
I have known Beth for well over 10 years. I first met her when we were both floor nurses at night on 3 west. I quickly learned that Beth was a kind, compassionate and genuinely caring person. I saw this in the care she gave at the bedside along with the help and knowledge she offered me as a new Nurse and a new hospital. Beth soon took on the night shift ACM role, and her temperament never changed. If anything, she offered more knowledge and help to the Nurses and PCAs. She would always listen to her Nurses' concerns and address them if she could.

I recall one instance when I was having a bad shift. A patient had complained that they couldn’t eat after a procedure. The patient screamed and took their frustration out on me, told me to leave the room, and demanded to talk to a manager. Normally I would be able to take this type of behavior from a patient and move on from it almost immediately, but this night was bad, I couldn’t catch up on anything and had a million tasks to get done. This just about pushed me over the edge. After Beth had spoken with the patient, she called me into her office to talk. I think she could see how generally upset I was, not just with this patient but as a whole. I still remember how she looked at me, almost matching my expression of tiredness and frustration. After our conversation, she told me to take a few minutes and sit down and that she would pass some meds for me and get some of my tasks done. She then said to me, “You know I always advocate for you guys. I know how hard you work.” This wasn’t lost on me; the fact that she recognized my frustration and listened to me. I believe that when she said that to me, she was talking about every staff member. Letting me know she had the entire unit's back. I felt a wave of relief after talking to her. Because of Beth, I was able to keep my composure and get through the shift.

When Beth took over as Clinical Manager on 2DMO, she made the unit a smoothly run, enjoyable place to work. Always leaving her office door open to listen to concerns or just chat about what was going on in your life. In early 2023, while talking in Beth’s office, she told me there was an opening for an Assistant Clinical Manager position on 3E and 1DOU and that I should apply. I was confused because I loved working on 2DMO and had no intention of leaving. After a short conversation, Beth told me she would hate to lose me, but at the same time, she would like to see me grow as a Nurse. This was true leadership, in my opinion. Pushing me to leave my comfort zone and do more at Southwest. It is because of Beth that I embraced a new challenge and pushed myself to do more.
