I want to give extra special kudos to Liz. The provider team wasn't sure what we would be dealing with once baby arrived, so they tried to prepare us for the worst. As an ICU nurse I appreciated the honesty and directness but was, of course, upset after our conversation. I was fearful for my baby boy and saddened when the neonatologist told me that I may not get my initial skin to skin, that my boy would likely need to be taken immediately by the NICU team. I couldn't do anything but cry. The unknown and lack of control were terrifying. Liz was right by my side when they left to comfort me. Later she surprised me with a congratulations balloon, stuffed animal, and cup with an inspirational quote on it. Then she sat down so we were eye level, gently placed her hand on my hand, and reassured me that we were in good hands and everything possible was being done to ensure my baby was safe. She told me "Just remember, no matter what happens today you will always be his mother. Nothing will change how amazing it is that you carried him inside of you for 9 months and the special bond you have. Remember how lucky you are for the time you have shared and how beautiful that is." There was no false hope or false promises. She didn't tell me everything would be fine. She was honest and truthful and heartfelt. This is a moment I will remember for the rest of my life and even now as I type this, her words give me chills and bring tears to my eyes. While it did not erase my fears or sadness, the comfort her words provided gave me renewed strength to face what was to come with a new perspective. It was a beautiful reminder of how truly amazing it is to be a woman and mother. Later in the day, Liz joined me for my laps so that my husband could get some much-needed rest. She walked with me as long as I wanted, even up until the very end of her shift and not once did she make me feel like I was an inconvenience or holding her up from leaving. We chatted and learned a little bit about each other. It was such a wonderful and welcome distraction.

It didn't necessarily happen the way I planned it but luckily my baby boy did just fine and I was able to have my skin-to-skin. He did not require a stay in the NICU and I was able to bring home a beautiful, healthy baby boy in just a couple of days. I know that not everyone you meet has that same happy ending, but I truly believe nurses can make all the difference in both the best and worst of times. I will be forever grateful to your team for everything they did for me and my family. You have something really special there in your unit and Liz is the best of the best.
