She uses her clinical expertise to identify opportunities for improvement and then is able to engage her colleagues to find solutions.
This RN exemplifies the Parkland value of COLLABORATION. She is an active member of the Parkland CAUTI-CLABSI Reduction Committee (CCRC). The RN has contributed multiple ideas for improvement to help decrease infection risk for our patients. She collaborated with infection prevention, lab, MRD, and members of the CCRC with the creation of a blood culture collection kit and served as the nurse actor in the training video for the hospital-wide rollout. The nurse implemented the use of a blood culture collection kit in the MICU months prior to the go live with MRD. She collaborated with the MICU HUCs and MRD to develop a process that would ensure the kits were available for MICU RNs in the supply room. The MICU blood culture contamination rates trended down significantly with the use of the kits.
The nurse has collaborated with Nursing Epic Optimization team to enhance nursing documentation. She identified an issue with the documentation of the urinary catheter stat lock and a flow row was added in Epic. The nurse identified the need for a dialysis catheter line necessity flow row and this was also added. She collaborated with the unit manager when a practice concern was identified with the management of chemically paralyzed patients in ICU. She proposed a change in Epic to add a flow row for the documentation of baseline energy level when using the train of four. This was also successfully added in Epic.
This nurse identified gaps in management and documentation for targeted temperature management patients and facilitated interdisciplinary discussions to improve patient care and documentation. The nurse worked with the MICU dietician, providers, pharmacist, RT, and therapy teams to get their feedback on the MICU admission order set. She presented the culmination of this work at the MICU quality APACHE meeting for approval and then submitted for epic optimization. This work will be a significant improvement for all members of our interprofessional team. She uses her clinical expertise to identify opportunities for improvement and then is able to engage her colleagues to find solutions. I would like to recognize this Extraordinary Nurse for all of her contributions to our unit and Parkland nursing.
