On September 20 I had my first patient code. At first, we had called a MET that later turned to a code after we had gotten the patient off the bedside commode and back into bed. Liz began compressions as I was suctioning the patient. The rest of the staff had called the family and was recording. After the doctor called the code, Liz, Nat and I began to clean up the patient. It was very emotional for all of us, being our first code and having the patient pass away. It became more emotional as the family came into the room frantic and upset. After the family went to the lounge and requested to speak with me, Liz offered to come with me. I told her it was ok and she didn't need to go with me. As I started to walk down to the lounge, Liz followed me and told me she was going with me. Looking back, I am very thankful she went with me. After I spoke with the family, Liz had taken a break with me and we discussed everything that had happened during the code. I would like to nominate Liz for the DAISY Award, for being there after the code had been stopped by the doctor and going a step beyond to be supportive for the family and for me. I am very grateful for all the support, dry shoulders, listening to me vent/discuss the event and the teamwork my co-workers offered that night.
