We've had the same homeless patient on our unit for a month pending placement from APS. While he's been on our floor, he has grown to be very friendly and comfortable with all our staff. However, Ella has been the nurse on our unit to go above and beyond for this man.
When case management started talking about releasing him, the patient expressed concern over the fact that he had no clothes to leave in. Ella took it upon herself to go buy him a couple of outfits for discharge.
When that placement option fell through, he again expressed concern that he had already worn the clothes for a couple of days in the hospital and he was nervous about showing up in dirty clothes. Ella took his new clothes home and washed them for him to bring them back clean. The smile on his face was huge! She truly made a positive impact on his life and his stay with us.
