Ella Spohn, BSN, RN, RNC-MNN
Ella's care, compassion, and unwavering dedication transformed one of the most challenging yet meaningful experiences of my life into an empowering and deeply positive one.
From the moment my labor began, Ella demonstrated an upbeat and enthusiastic disposition that immediately put me at ease. As this was my second child, my labor initially progressed quickly. However, when it came time to push, my progress slowed significantly, and I ultimately pushed for nearly three hours.
Throughout this physically and emotionally exhausting time, Ella never once gave up on me. She recognized when I became discouraged and depleted, and she responded with empathy, encouragement, and clinical expertise. Ella skillfully guided me through a variety of laboring positions while carefully monitoring my baby and ensuring my safety and comfort. Her calm presence and reassuring words kept me grounded even during the most difficult moments.
At a critical point, Ella suggested I take a brief 20-minute rest, an intervention that proved invaluable. When we resumed, she introduced the use of a pull-up bar to assist with pushing. This innovative approach made all the difference. Within minutes of using this technique, I was able to deliver my baby boy successfully.
After delivery, we learned from the physician that my baby was in a sunny-side-up position, which contributed to the prolonged and difficult pushing phase. Despite this added challenge, Ella’s persistence, adaptability, and encouragement never wavered.
Beyond her clinical excellence, Ella also ensured that my husband felt fully involved and supported throughout the experience. She encouraged him as an active partner in my care, helping us maintain a sense of connection and even moments of laughter during an intense process. She fostered an environment where I felt comfortable playing music and creating a personal, meaningful birthing experience.
Labor and delivery are among the most sacred and vulnerable moments in a person’s life. Nurses like Ella play an irreplaceable role in guiding patients through these experiences with dignity, strength, and compassion.
As a nurse myself, I can say that Ella embodies the very qualities I have strived to bring to my own patients: exceptional care, empathy, and the ability to instill confidence even in the most challenging circumstances.
We are profoundly grateful for the care Ella provided. She made what could have been an overwhelming experience feel manageable, supported, and, in the end, joyful. Our family will always remember her as an integral part of our son’s birth story.
