Ellen Pateman, BSN, RN had cared for a 74 year old man who while golfing with his son suffered cardiac arrest and had CPR initiated by his son. He came to Saint Clare's Hospital, Denville where he was treated in the Cardiac Lab for a myocardial infarction. The patient was then transferred to the CCU for Therapeutic Hypothermia or Code Ice. Therapeutic Hypothermia is a medical treatment that is used on patients who have suffered cardiac arrest. It is done in an effort to improve perfusion to the brain. This intensive therapy requires the patient be cooled to 33 degrees Celsius. Code Ice patients require the highest level of care and the nurse must have special training and expertise in caring for this patient.
Ellen cared for him and his family during their time of crisis. The son recognized all the wonderful care that Ellen not only provided the patient but the family as well. The patient was eventually discharged from the hospital and was doing well enough to attend a "Survivor's Luncheon" that was provided by the hospital. He and his son made a point of coming to the CCU to find Ellen and thank her for the wonderful compassionate care she provided both the patient and the family.
Ellen has been a nurse at Saint Clare's since 2004 in the CCU. She has a BSN from the College of Saint Elizabeth and is currently completing her Master's Degree as a Clinical Nurse Leader from Sacred Heart University.
