Eloisa inspires her team by setting a good example. When things get tough, we look up to her.
In addition to performing her job at an exemplary level, Eloisa demonstrates an extraordinary commitment to the Otolaryngology and Ophthalmology departments at The Hospital for Sick Children. Eloisa has been working at Sick Kids hospital within the perioperative department for over 20 years. She has always been a dedicated worker and worked tirelessly rotating through the services before settling into her home and passion, Otolaryngology in 2005.

In 2015, she took on the Clinical Support Nurse role for the respective Otolaryngology and Ophthalmology department. From then on, we have come to witness her true strength as a leader as she began to shine. Eloisa is fondly known as the “go-to” within our department. She often goes above and beyond providing exceptional support for new staff rotating through the department while ensuring the permanent team within is supported.

Apart from orientating nursing staff, she will take on the responsibility of helping new fellows and residents acclimatized and familiarize them with the service. She displays patience with new nursing staff rotating through the OR and assures their learning needs are met. Despite her busy commitments as a CSN, Eloisa will work endlessly to support her team members and staff surgeons on a daily basis. Eloisa always starts her day assessing the needs of the room and providing assistance accordingly. As the day progresses, she will continue checking in while lending support with any situation that arises from equipment malfunction, missing supplies, and covering breaks. As members of her team, we are comforted with the knowledge that she is readily available at all times. A quick phone call or message sends her from the office back to the OR to resolve any issues on hand. Her relentless dedication is noted even during weekends and holidays when she can be easily reached by phone to help virtually and go as far as coming in on her days off to assist with cases on numerous occasions.

One said action was displayed last year when Dr. C had to perform an emergency intubation on a newborn at Mount Sinai Hospital. At the time, all of the ENT nurses were assigned to rooms and Eloisa happened to be off that very day. Unknowingly, he called her and asked for her assistance. She came from home to assist with the intubation, without mentioning a word to Dr. C it was her day off.

Another great hallmark of an excellent leader is the depth of knowledge they possess. Eloisa is no exception to this and demonstrates her vast expertise in either service. When she assumed the role as CSN for Ophthalmology, she immediately immersed herself within the service scrubbing for every procedure repeatedly to ensure that she gained a full in-depth comprehension of each surgical procedure. Her relentless tenacity and determination to become an expert in a service that was once new to her exemplifies her dedication and accountability as a great leader. Her learning agility is unprecedented and her wealth of knowledge in each respective service makes her an exceptional team leader.

Eloisa always has the answer… always. Her humility often shows, always preferring to shy away from the limelight. Eloisa will shelter more than her share of the blame when an unfortunate situation arises. Taking it upon herself to treat it as a learning opportunity to gain a better understanding and most importantly to take appropriate measures to prevent future incidents from occurring. On the contrary, she will quietly celebrate the success in the shadows enabling her team members to receive recognition and credit. Her standard of care is superior creating an environment where attributes of trust, compassion, mutual respect, continued professional development, and ethical behavior are modeled and supported. She inspires all of us by always setting a model example. Her strong work ethic makes her team strive to be like her. Eloisa inspires her team by setting a good example. When things get tough, we look up to her. Eloisa always remains calm under pressure which keeps us calm and keeps our motivation high. Without a doubt, her actions inspire others to learn more, do more and become more.

Eloisa is extremely passionate about her work. Her tenacious energy drives and motivates us to work harder as well as perform better. We have nothing but great respect, admiration, appreciation, and love for her. Eloisa’s exceptional leadership skills combined with her caring empathetic nature, dedicated work ethic, and compassionate character make her an ideal candidate for this leadership award.
