During the pandemic, LBJ instituted a safety guideline of limited visitation hours and a reduction of visitors occupancy. Due to these visiting constraints , NICU/ HRN units offered virtual visits via iPads for our parents. Something significant Elvi observed was that only the parents who had iPhones / iPads were the ones doing the visits. Elvira Garcia, having an android device herself, realized this issue was paramount! Many of our tiny patient population stay in the hospital for weeks. She went up the leadership chain which landed her concerns on the desk of Dr. P. Afterwards, IT installed the Google operating system for android users on the iPads. We didn't know this was technically possible! IT collaborated with Elvi , educating her on how to use the Google operating system, downloading the proper apps, and connecting to the iPads. She in turn educated the staff and parents on usage. The parents were happy and appreciative. Elvi was instrumental in assuring all parents, whether an Android or Apple user , had (and still have) an opportunity to visit their loved ones virtually. I'm honored to work with a nurse who demonstrates and exudes such compassion. Kudos to Elvi for going over and beyond!
