Meet our DAISY Team Award recipients for the month of March, the Emergency Department, at Jefferson Frankford Hospital. The ED team was nominated by their manager, who stated, “The Emergency room staff at Frankford Campus is like no other, and their team approach, dedication, and compassion make them stand above the rest. For this reason and many others, we would like to nominate the staff for the DAISY Team Award. The emergency department's caregivers understand the value of collaboration and embrace it. Nobody is alone, no matter how the day is going. The nursing staff works as a team to care for all the patients, whether they come in through the walk-in entrance or the ambulance bay, where many patients arrive by police escort or via Fire Rescue. Our ED expands an entire city block and on a daily basis our nurses provide attention to patients with an array of chief complaints ranging from very young ages to the elderly and everything in between. We have collectively worked in the ED for over 50 years and have definitely had the pleasure of working alongside some of the best nurses. This current group of nursing staff equally demonstrates talent in providing care to their patients. What stands out is their endurance in this ever-changing emergency environment and the career we call nursing. They display and promote the highest level of patient care with attention to the patient’s entire family. Additionally, they work well with multidisciplinary teams to advocate for patients and provide the best care possible. This group of nurses has been able to shine regardless of the post-COVID effects of newly licensed nurses, and the ingenious methods of educating them during school. Their work ethic at the bedside outperforms the nationwide nursing shortage. They accept it and work smart together as a team. Because of the lack of nurses, the team may not be as large on some days, but they always persevere. High staff satisfaction ratings and their continued attendance are evidence that the team has remained positive despite the nursing shortages. We have been present on numerous occasions when a new life was brought into this world, and the challenges that sometimes arise. The beauty of a healthy newborn or the uncertainties of a premature birth, whatever they may face they face it together. The team dynamics are centered on trauma patients, who require multiple hands to stabilize them before transfer to a trauma-designated hospital, especially when multiple arrive at one time. Our staff's handling during such situations has been highly praised and recognized. Our small community ED has seen respectable survival rates for some patients who have been sent to the trauma hospital after starting here. We have frequently offered them the chance to receive ongoing care at a trauma center. During these crucial moments, these nurses collaborate and remain calm while keeping their composure. Our team’s unwavering commitment to working together to achieve our goal of the best possible patient outcomes is always apparent. Despite the fact that nursing leadership has transformed over the past year, testimonials from patients, families, staff members, and leaders about the staff's bravery and fortitude make us feel honored to be in charge of such an incredible group of people. Additionally, this team fundraises and contributes annually to The Karen Smith Scholarship fund for which the leadership team played a big role in attaining endowment. Giving back to the public through crop-picking in the community garden and organizing clothing drives are a few other reasons this team is extraordinary. Their ability to rise to the occasion and tackle any issue including ongoing staffing challenges is why we believe this unit is deserving of the DAISY Team Award recognition.
