I want to recognize Hannah Vargas and her coworkers in the ED. A young teenager was in the ED for several days while waiting for placement into an outside facility. This young girl became very bored while in the ED; she would frequently scream and yell at staff members who would walk in front of her room. When it would be time for her to bathe, she would run down the halls to avoid the shower. She came to us with very long matted hair. Hannah brought in her supplies like a wide-tooth comb, conditioner, and detangler. Hannah assisted our young patient into the shower and then spent the next 2 hours detangling her hair. It took the whole ED team to make this happen, for Hannah had nine other patients that needed nursing care. Her pod mate Priscilla Brown took over the rest of her assignment so that Hannah could finish her task. Angela Aulicino cleaned her room and made her bed while in the shower. A call was made to dietary by Karin Ciccone for a special breakfast. When the charge nurse and nurses from Pod A realized what was happening, they also assisted with Pod B nursing care. Our young teenager's demeanor changed after Hannah spent time with her; she was smiling and waving to staff members that walked by. Our staff that walked by would give encouraging words, bringing even more smiles. This small act of kindness shows how our staff goes above and beyond to care for ED patients.
