I just want to say I am so happy to work with such compassionate and loving people.
For those who worked with our young patient, after 238 hours, you all warmed my heart so much.
From Goodwill bringing in toys, snacks, shower items, and a fresh toothbrush. Others brought in breakfast, lunch, and dinner or just time spent socializing. He loved the medics taking his blood pressure before his medications.
To the security team for sitting with him in their free time because he admired them. Playing with toys and talking about shows with him, to even just spending time with him because he needed it. He always admired the men in uniform.
Our ER physicians- I watched Dr. Tuffy sit with him for hours after her shift building legos and reading books.
The crisis workers. God bless you all. I witnessed you reading to him, in between managing your other patients and advocating your butts off for him. I remember him telling us he didn't know how to read "very well", and you took the time to read to him and teach.
My fellow nurses and techs - I saw your hearts over the past few days, through our chaos and even a full moon. I witnessed many bring in clothes, games, legos, food, and just some plain good old lovin' love. Let's not forget the best of structure we could give and discipline from "The Boss," (Sharon). I watched those who sat with him and talk to him and play games, not just be there. I heard him laugh watching Jumanji and I know he enjoyed the games of "I Spy" at the window.
Who knows what normal was to him, or even love. But I was able to witness the heart, compassion, and empathy from my coworkers and that is why I genuinely enjoy working with you all.
This story did not stop there. One of our nurses (Mary Jo Rotondi) became so attached she told him to call her whenever he needed her. She stated, "he took a part of my heart with him." He did reach out to her by phone from his new foster home. The foster mother shared with MJ her desire to devote the time and love to this child. She let her know that he was adjusting to his new home and had found a friend to play with. MJ shared this with the team and I believe everyone felt at peace, we had hoped he truly will thrive in this new environment.
The team held a thank you baked goods table for our fellow Goodwill EMS to thank them for all their love and support.
