March 2026 Honoree
Emi Spiro, RN
I am honored to nominate Emi Spiro for the DAISY Award.
During my mother’s admission, I introduced myself as her caretaker and home health aide. Later, my mother clarified to Emi that I am her daughter, the one she gave birth to. When I returned the next day, Emi addressed this with humor and warmth, joking that she was “offended” I hadn’t said my mother was my mom first, not just my patient.
That moment stayed with me. It prompted honest self-reflection about how language reflects mindset, and how caregiving can quietly shift emotional roles if we aren’t careful. Emi’s gentle humor and sincerity helped me recognize the importance of grounding my care in love, balance, and emotional health—for my mother and for myself.
Beyond providing excellent physical care, Emi also supported us emotionally. Her insight encouraged me to be more mindful of how I express love, and to seek therapy to maintain a healthy emotional state while caregiving. That guidance has already made me a better daughter and caregiver.
Emi is a rare nurse who treats the whole person—and the family—with dignity, compassion, wisdom, and heart. Her care left a lasting impact on our lives, and I am deeply grateful for her presence during a vulnerable time.
