I would like to nominate Emilee Bumpas for the DAISY Award because she exemplifies what a compassionate nurse is all about. Emilee received a very challenging autistic patient post-op on Friday. The patient was combative, uncooperative, and just not happy. Mom was Spanish-speaking, so a language barrier was also in place; she was distraught and crying.

The patient was treated with medications accordingly, but what truly made the difference was Emilee's care. The room was quickly turned to meet the patient's needs. The bed was taken out, mats were placed on the floor for safety, where he could lie comfortably, and sensory accessories were brought in to help the patient's comfort. Emilee lay on the floor with the patient and mom, holding him and helping to keep him safe. With the help of Child Life and Interpretation, Emilee made the connection with the patient and mom to de-escalate the behavior and help with their recovery. Emilee showed compassion, was caring, and understanding. She remained in the room for over 4 hours at the side of the mom and the patient. The patient would calm down and at times did spit or attempt to hit, but Emilee remained calm and continued to support the patient and mom.

At one point, the patient fell asleep in her arms, and she remained in the same position to allow him to rest. At discharge, the patient was back to himself, hugging Emilee as she had been his safe space and comfort. Mom was extremely grateful and expressed her gratitude and thankfulness. The patient's recovery was a team effort, but Emilee exemplified what nursing is truly about. She nursed, cared, showed compassion, patience, and understanding. As one of our unit baby nurses, I am extremely proud of Emilee and am grateful she is a part of our team. Thank you.
