Emily walked into our room and announced she was going to be our nurse for the day. I went from feeling so down to radiating happiness at Emily’s positive energy. Her optimism and energy were so contagious to both me and my husband.
I was having a really difficult time getting my newborn to latch correctly and with expressing colostrum/milk. It was extremely painful, discouraging, and emotional. Emily was our first lactation consultant, and she did so much to help us work on a latch with our daughter, reset my expectations, and help me emotionally handle the frustration and guilt. I was ready to give up, but she put so much time and effort into helping us and making me feel like a valued human again. She gave us a couple of different methods to try that put my mind at ease at continuing to encourage breastfeeding and breast milk while also making sure our child was eating enough. We put those suggestions into practice that day to encourage my milk to come in, while also allowing me to heal up from the damage that had already been done. We had a rough night after that and my emotional state was not good. The next morning, Emily walked into our room and announced she was going to be our nurse for the day. I went from feeling so down to radiating happiness at Emily’s positive energy. Her optimism and energy were so contagious to both me and my husband. Knowing she was going to be able to take some more time with us to continue working on breastfeeding was such a relief. She made me feel cared for and like a priority, rather than just my newborn. She protected me from interruptions for a couple of hours that morning to allow me to finally sleep. She then came in for every feeding to watch, guide, and educate every step of the way. That afternoon she helped us make arrangements for getting donor milk prepared to take home so we could supplement with the real thing while we waited for my milk supply to come in. I really feel like if it weren’t for Emily, our entire postpartum experience would have been a completely different story, with a less happy ending. I would have given up on breastfeeding altogether. But Emily set us up for success and cheered us on every step of the way. I’ve never seen a nurse make a patient that much of a priority before, and I work in healthcare myself. Emily was an angel to us, and we are so eternally grateful for everything she did for our family.
