If Emily had not moved as quickly and used her critical care skills, I’m not sure the patient would have survived.
I was working with Emily a few weeks ago when a young [patient] came in with [diagnosis]. The patient had called in about 5 minutes prior to arrival. Without knowing details, Emily had called the blood bank, preparing/expecting for an emergent blood transfusion. Initially, the patient was somewhat stable. Emily moved quickly, getting the patient set up. She grabbed the hemorrhage cart, along with the physician, and quickly started attending to patients’ needs. She did such a good job emergently transfusing blood and administering medications that we don’t use down here often. Emily didn’t hesitate and saved this young patient’s life. If Emily had not moved as quickly and used her critical care skills, I’m not sure the patient would have survived.
Despite all interventions, the patient continued to become more unstable, and bleeding persisted. EMS arrived to transport the patient and stated the patient was too unstable and was not comfortable transporting. With permission from the charge nurse and physician, Emily stated that she would go with EMS to ensure the emergent bag of blood was administered and to help EMS. The patient and the spouse were scared. Emily did such a good job tending to the patient's emotional and physical needs. Emily used her critical care skills and quick thinking. I am truly proud of Emily and thankful for her as a coworker. She always rises and exceeds expectations. I’m always impressed by how she handles stressful scenarios as a newer nurse.
