Emily Baker always provides exemplary compassionate care to all her patients. She frequently receives thank-you cards from patients and families. This evening, a child unexpectedly cardiac and respiratory arrested. Emergent care was promptly provided, successfully, as the child was given CPR, intubated, and prepped for helicopter transport.
The child's mother was understandably emotional. She tearfully tried to leave her phone number, as she had no gas to drive to Boston and no money to buy gas. The mom said she'd have to go to her mom's house, wake her up, and then go to the ATM for gas money, all before driving to Boston to be with her critically ill child.
Emily immediately told the mother not to worry; we'd find her gas money. She then collected money from staff and gave it to the mother, so the mother could get to the Boston hospital to be with her child.
