She was kind, caring, advocated for me and my care, and went well beyond her job to care for every member of my family.
We went in for what we thought would be a routine induction for our little boy. Emily Calvert started her shift about the same time that our induction started. The day may have been completely routine for her, but it certainly was not for us. During labor, there were a few times that my own health became a concern and Emily recognized it quickly, talked us through it, and fixed the situation. She navigated us through our labor journey and was the “calm” to the crazy. My doctor was delivering two babies at once, so Emily recognized it was time to push and again, brought calm to the crazy until the doctor could arrive. I truly could not have remained as calm and in control without her. Shortly after, our son made his appearance and things went south quickly. Our son was struggling to breathe. Emily did not skip a beat and talked me through every step being taken to help our son. She cared for me; the mama who was watching her helpless son work way harder than he should to breathe on his own. The pediatric team took our son from the room, and I sent my husband with him. I was left in the room with Emily to begin postpartum care. Emily quickly became my friend, my advocate, my family’s advocate, and a much-needed dose of calm. My son was placed in NICU, and the remainder of the day was an emotional roller coaster. Emily was so much more than just my “nurse” during labor. She was kind, caring, advocated for me and my care, and went well beyond her job to care for every member of my family. Emily is a nurse we will remember forever and cannot wait to tell our son about it as he grows. She was the nurse that mattered when our world was crashing, and I am forever grateful for her. Wellstar is blessed to have such an incredible nurse on their team as I am certain we are not the only lives she has touched.
