Emily made me feel important, she made me feel seen. Emily gave me medication to take away the physical pain and made the emotional pain manageable.
When I arrived in recovery after my emergency C-Section, I was very traumatized and overwhelmed. Nothing that happened was at all what I expected. After my first meeting with a nurse assistant, she told me that there was a nurse who shared my last name Dean. We didn’t think we could be related because we were not from Florida. Little did we know that we were both from Kentucky. Up until my last night here, this Emily person was just a rumor, a person I heard about and I wasn’t sure that I would ever get to meet her. I was laying in my bed exhausted, out of spirit, very emotional, and feeling out of place when this sweet, kind soul comes into my room. Somehow, I just knew it. I asked, “Are you Emily Dean?” and there she was, she lifted my spirits so high. I was in severe pain and my incision was killing me. I had been talked down to by doctors and made to feel unimportant. I was even yelled at during labor by someone who was supposed to be there for me. Emily made me feel important, she made me feel seen. Emily gave me medication to take away the physical pain and made the emotional pain manageable. I have met many nurses and her sweet soul is one that I would never forget. She felt like home. I hope that this unit knows how valuable she is and is grateful for her presence. I genuinely feel like she was God-sent, hand-picked for me and my family. It is crazy how something so simple as being treated like you matter, is so special to a woman who just gave birth. I needed that more than I ever knew.
