Emily always arrives with a smile on her face, a positive outlook and a helping hand for her shift no matter the volume of patients seeking treatment in the Scottish Rite Emergency Department. Her persistent demonstration of team work not only shines in her patient care but also as the coÂchair/secretary of the ED Clinical Practice Council and an active member of the Patient Safety and Quality Council. She has what seems to be unlimited energy when it comes to mentoring, teaching and caring for our patients even if it means staying a few hours beyond the end of her scheduled shift. She received overwhelming recognition from her department peers as a great listener; respectful and considerate coworker; fostering teamwork and doing what is best for the patient and her peers.
Parents consistently let us know through surveys and discharge nurse callbacks what an exceptional nurse she is. Recently, the family of a 12-year-old who broke her wrist playing lacrosse recalls her as their nurse. It was the patient's first emergency department visit ever, and the young lady was scared as well as disappointed she would probably miss the Taylor Swift concert that very night. The team, of which Emily was a part of for the sedation to reduce her fractured arm, was described as fantastic. Even though the patient's dad was a pharmacist and had a good understanding of the procedure, he reported that she and her team did a good job of explaining the process to the patient and placed her at ease. Her father commented that his daughter listened to the staff more than him. The patient and family were so grateful that the child was able to make it to the concert that night and she recovered well. Emily has been praised by our sedation physicians for her organization, attentiveness to detail and compassion for those needing a little extra attention to keep them calm through a procedure.
Emily consistently works side by side with our newly hired nurses, new graduates as well as seasoned, logging more than 340 precepting hours cumulatively over the past several months. As a mentor to our new grads, she inspires their personal growth through her own work as a safety coach, contributing author to the ENA Lantern Award for the SR Emergency Dept. Despite her full plate, she has also found time to be a clinical instructor for pediatric rotations for one of our local universities. Emily Drew's dedication to nursing shines through each time she cares for one of our patients, educates an upcoming or newly hired nurse, or works behind the scenes in one of our councils to ensure we are all dedicated to being better.
