My father is in heart failure and on dialysis with fluid on his lungs. Today is my father’s birthday. Emily ordered several breathing treatments, consistently suctioned the phlegm produced from his coughing so he could breath better, and fed him when he was able to eat. During these interactions, she was playful and encouraging with him and he responded very well to her. Along with his lungs and heart, she had to help manage numerous bed sores and high levels of pain.

In addition, she arranged for the nursing students on staff to join together and sing “happy birthday” to him. He was elated and humbled and extremely grateful. In a situation where he was struggling mightily to stay alive, she went above and beyond to make his day as special as possible. Her care went well beyond medical and struck the very heart of humanity. I and my family members will be grateful forever.
