I had a very critical patient and the husband decided to withdraw care. It had been a very emotionally draining experience and Emily assisted me throughout the process.
Other nurses, myself included, and respiratory all became tearful during the night. After shift change, Emily left through the main ER entrance and saw the expired patient's husband sitting on a bench and sat down with him, held his hand for an hour and a half and let him cry with her so that he wouldn't have to be alone as he didn't have family locally. This is the reason I am proud of my team and Emily, for how we care for our patients and their family even when we are not on the clock.
