Emily took extraordinary care of my grandma during a very scary time for our family. My grandma is a caregiver to her husband of 60+ years with Alzheimer’s, mother of 4, grandmother of 7, and great-grandma to one great-grandson with two more great-grandchildren children on the way. When grandma had an acute episode with left-sided weakness and facial droop we thought she had suffered a horrible stroke. This was devastating news and truly shook our whole family. Emily took care of grandma with great compassion, connecting to grandma by closely assessing neuro status. On the second day of grandma’s stay, Emily had noticed a very drastic mental status change. Emily was able to notice this immediately at the start of her shift and facilitated neurology and stroke protocols which ultimately led to a completely different diagnosis and reason behind all of her stroke-like symptoms by the end of that shift. Emily listened to the needs of my grandma as well as the wishes, and many questions and concerns of our family. She made sure to be persistent in her critical thinking even escalating the situation to the charge nurse to help figure out the reasons behind grandma’s change of mental status and made numerous extra pages to doctors to make sure my grandma got all of the tests she needed. Truly demonstrated extraordinary care. Emily is a strong nurse who went above and beyond and truly made a difference in my Grandma’s life as well as all of us as family members.
