Admitting your newborn baby into an intensive care unit can be a frightening experience for a family, but having the right nurse can ease the worry.
Emily Kribs was that right nurse for a family who recently stayed at the Dana Brown Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center.
The innovative and exceptional care by Kribs led her to win the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses in January.
Kribs and her compassionate care have inspired patient families and staff members alike.
“Emily cared for a very complicated patient whose parents had difficulty learning,” wrote neonatal clinical dietitian Rita C, who nominated Kribs. “Emily created an in-depth notebook for them, which allowed them to demonstrate ability to care for their baby. Emily also created a ‘to-go’ bag for the family in case the baby had an emergency and had to be admitted to the hospital.
“The baby was subsequently admitted to a distant outside hospital, and the staff there commented on how helpful all the information was.”
A family member of one of Kribs’ tiny patients described her in glowing terms, saying that Kribs was the “replica of what a good nurse should be.”
“She is a highly accommodating nurse—very cheerful, patient and welcoming,” wrote the patient’s family member. “She has a highly skilled clinical knowledge. She treats everyone equal and is so patient and caring—always willing to help anyone out whether she is the nurse in charge or not.”
