When the doctor gave us jolting news, Emily gave it time to sink in and gently approached us later to see if she could answer any questions.
Our mother was transported to MMC on a Monday and by Tuesday, she went into respiratory failure and was placed on a ventilator. I and my two sisters rushed in from all over the continental US and arrived to see our mom heavily sedated, unable to communicate and connect to a plethora of IV meds, chest tubes, and machines.
During some of our darkest days, we were greeted by phenomenal nurses who gave top-notch care to our mom while showing true compassion and care to our family. While many of the nurses on staff were amazing, Emily was a true angel in scrubs. She took the time to explain the need for each medication, she had the knowledge to detail signs of progress. She had the patience to gracefully tend to all of our requests to wash our mom's moth, clean her eyes, and moisturize her lips. She never made us feel like we were nagging her and she displayed an above-average bedside manner when she care for our mother. She detailed her goals to wean my mother from all the medications in a meticulous fashion so that her body could adjust. She assured us that we could be there for a breathing test that would allow for our mom to wake up with the family present, and while she didn't get off the ventilator that day, we knew she could tell we were there.
When the doctor gave us jolting news, Emily gave it time to sink in and gently approached us later to see if she could answer any questions. My mother is alive today thanks to all the angels that grace the MMC hallways and we genuinely appreciate them all. And to Emily - who showed true compassion and care - and even supplied us coffee along the way, Thank You will never be enough. Just know you made all the difference in our time of need.
