Miss Emily Morris is an exceptional bedside nurse and charge nurse whose dedication and commitment to our veterans are evident. In everything she does, she consistently demonstrates outstanding clinical judgment, compassion, and leadership; her daily actions reflect our organization's I-CARE values.

One morning, Miss Morris received orders to discharge a patient. As part of her thorough assessment, she noticed that the patient's condition had changed. The patient had been admitted for a distinctive rash on his arm, which staff had previously outlined with a marker to track progress. Although the rash had appeared to be improving, Miss Morris observed that it had spread beyond the marked borders on the morning of discharge. Instead of proceeding with the discharge because the order was placed, she asked the patient whether the physician had evaluated him that morning. When the patient reported that he had not been seen, Miss Morris immediately contacted the physician and kindly requested a reevaluation. Her actions ensured that the patient received appropriate care rather than being discharged prematurely, preventing potential re-admission and promoting safer outcomes for this veteran. This is one of many examples of high reliability organization principles in action that Miss Morris exemplifies. Speaking up for safety, verified before proceeding, and focused on what is right for the patient. She also took extra time to educate a veteran on the importance of medication compliance for managing high blood pressure. Miss Morris discussed how taking the medication as prescribed reduces the risk of complications, readmission, and even life-threatening events. By engaging the veteran respectfully and supportively, she reinforced the importance of self-care and empowered him to take control of his health. Miss Morris is an excellent nurse; she consistently does the right thing, even when it requires extra time or effort. She did not cut corners during the discharge process and ensured a patient's worsening rash was properly evaluated.

Miss Morris communicates excellently with veterans, showing kindness and genuine concern, whether she is educating a veteran about vital health practices or advocating for patient Safety or staff safety. She truly and consistently advocates for all her patients. Miss Morris takes ownership of her duties and cares deeply about the outcomes of the veteran she serves. Calling physicians for reassessment, making sure patients have all the medications they need, making sure they have all the education they need to understand what they need to do to best care for themselves at home, and not just following orders.

Miss Morris speaks with patients in a calm, clear, and encouraging manner. Her patient education shows deep respect for veterans’ autonomy and understanding, even when she must repeat it more than once. Veterans often compliment her and her care, especially her thoroughness as a nurse.

Miss Morris continually goes above expectations to ensure safe, high-quality care. Her vigilance and judgment prevented potential readmission, strengthened the discharge process, and enhanced patient satisfaction. Miss Morris is the kind of nurse who elevates the standard of care simply by being who she is: thoughtful, observant, and compassionate. Committed to doing what is right for the veterans. Her dedication makes a meaningful difference every single day, and her actions truly exemplify the spirit of the DAISY Award.

Thank you, Emily, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
