They spent time with her, talked with her, and made her feel more comfortable with the situation.
Destiny Gooden and Emily Negron, both 4P RNs, were very pleasant, helpful, and patient. Both came down, talked with the patient, and accessed her port. Unfortunately, when attempted, the port would not flush. The patient then stated it always has to be flushed with heparin which we cannot do. After education about our inability to flush with heparin, the patient was agreeable to another peripheral IV being placed. At that time, the nurse educator placed a 24 gauge in her hand. Though we were unable to utilize the patient's port due to the need for heparin flushes, the patient presented thankful for the attempt and for the efforts of the nurses who came. They spent time with her, talked with her, and made her feel more comfortable with the situation. I am grateful for the collaborative efforts of Destiny and Emily. The patient was finally able to resume IV fluids and get the necessary medications, but she also presented thankful for her wishes being heard. The efforts and attitude of all are greatly appreciated and their actions empowered the patient in her own plan of care.
