Not only was she compassionate and patient, but she was also a huge advocate for us that night.
I was recently admitted at KOPH with my daughter, J and Emily was our bedside nurse on the last night of our 4-night stay. My husband, daughter, and I were all exhausted after an unexpected almost-week-long stay that included an overnight in the ED, a brief stint in the PICU, and a few nights on the Med Surg floor. Emily was exactly what we didn't know we needed that night! She was so calm and kind- She was one of the few people my daughter didn't shriek at when the door opened, and I think that's because J knew she was a kind spirit. She talked directly to J, despite her being only two, and took the time to tell her what she was going to do. Not only was she compassionate and patient, but she was also a huge advocate for us that night. Realizing we were exhausted, she safely advocated and communicated with our FLOC and Care Team to space out J's blood sugar checks to every 6 hours from every 3 hours, immediately rechecked when she noticed one was low, and balanced all of our need for rest with J's need for care in a responsible and safe way. She made sure we had what we needed and set us up for a successful discharge the next day. As a nurse at CHOP PHL, I know the demands of working on a Med-Surg floor, how busy and stressful it can be, and how hard it can be to balance everyone's needs, but Emily made us feel heard, and took care of us all that night. She is a fantastic example of what Nursing at its core is- kindness, compassion, and care for others- and I, for one, am grateful to know that colleagues like her exist across the CHOP enterprise. Thank you, Emily, for the phenomenal care you provided us that night! You are wildly appreciated!
