Emily looked at me with sympathy, kindness, and confidence that we would fix it and told me fed is best. My fears and guilt were IMMEDIATELY washed away.
Emily has saved my breastfeeding journey for both of my babies. My five year old is the healthiest kid you'll meet and I credit his kickin' immune system to Emily. When he was born, I immediately had trouble nursing. My nipples were bleeding and I positively dreaded feeding him. I was sobbing in the middle of the night, with a screaming hungry child. It's a pretty precarious place to be if you're trying to avoid postpartum mood disorders. My husband dragged me in desperation to the Lytle Center where I met Emily. She looked at me with sympathy, kindness, and confidence that we would fix it and told me fed is best. My fears and guilt were IMMEDIATELY washed away. We made a plan, I understood more about nursing and pumping than I ever thought I would need to, and I walked out of Lytle with hope and control of my situation. Over the next 11 months, I would visit her any time I had a concern about breastfeeding. My baby nursed well into his 11th month until he suddenly didn't really care about nursing and just wanted to eat ALL the food. Fast forward to September 2019 when I had my daughter. The telltale signs of a nursing struggle were apparent right away, but THIS time I knew exactly what to do. I took out my pump, got all-purpose nipple ointment, and made an appointment to see Emily. The word had gotten out how simply magical she is so it was much harder to get in. But, nonetheless, I saw her and confirmed my plan of action. Two months later I was told that my baby was malnourished and I needed to see pediatric gastroenterology. My first instinct after that appointment was to see Emily. Lytle got me in immediately and Emily once again completely put me at ease. I went in panicked that I was starving my baby and came out with a new plan of action and a smile. Connection, planning that works for patients, education, teamwork with other providers, and above all making patients feel more than comfortable but IN CONTROL of their destiny are not just boxes that Emily checks to meet quality metrics or patient satisfaction surveys. They seem to be in her DNA. I wish we could clone Emily and every single new mother who wants to feed their baby breast milk could have access to her care. She is simply wonderful and deserves all the recognition. All of it!!
