Emily has always had a fantastic gift for developing rapport with patients and families. She is honest with them, explains until they understand, and treats every patient with respect, ensuring they feel like a person and not just a patient. While I have often watched her care for sick patients and witnessed her interactions with families, this particular instance stood out to me. Emily was caring for a patient who was very ill and rapidly decompensating. He had a large family at the bedside, asking all the right questions to understand what was happening. Emily guided them to understand and had the most challenging conversation with them—that he would not recover. Emily worked with the family to ensure that all the proper religious ceremonies were performed to honor the patient and his beliefs. She made plans to celebrate his customs after death as well. After allowing him to remain untouched for the allotted time, Emily led the family in a sort of procession through the hospital as far as we could take them to the morgue. These actions brought the family much peace and comfort after the unexpected loss of someone they loved. Emily has never shown prejudice or bias when caring for patients. She provides everyone with the best care possible and often goes the extra mile for them. It is an honor to work with her and call her my friend.
