Emily has always stood out to me as an amazing and compassionate nurse. The story about our patient just further illustrates how Emily exemplifies what it is to be such a compassionate nurse. Our patient was a homeless man, at the end of his life without any close family or friends in the area. As he was placed on comfort care, Emily advocated for him to have aggressive management of his pain/shortness of breath and held a vigil for him throughout her entire shift, holding his hand, comforting him until his last breath. It was amazing to see such a caring nurse providing a peaceful death for a patient who was so alone. Thank you Emily for all you do for us and patients/families at WakeMed.
