Emily proved to be not only the nurse and caregiver the patient needed during this time but also the support system and colleague we needed.
Emily Powell showed exceptional nursing skills during a devastating code we worked on. Due to the classification of said code, it was the first time several individuals involved were dealing with something of this nature. When this code happened, Emily was precepting a new grad nurse, and she took over as lead nurse hastily. This code lasted about 2 hours, and Emily did not leave that room once. She had many roles to play: CPR, administering epi, assisting other providers in the room, and numerous other tasks. Unfortunately, this code ended dreadfully. Despite using all resources at our disposal and exhausting all efforts to the point of likely exhaustion. Emily stayed with the patient even when the family arrived. After everything, she pulled her new grad to the side and talked her through each step, despite this being Emily’s first time experiencing this process.

As someone who experienced this event alongside Emily and others, I can attest first-hand to how traumatic this was to many individuals, including myself and Emily. With this knowledge, Emily checked on me for the rest of that shift and helped me with anything that I needed. The day after, she texted me to check on me and continued to check on me for a week after. She displayed such selflessness, and despite this also being her first code that did not make it, she still checked on everyone else before herself and sat there while they talked and cried.

She sat down with her new grad once more. She walked her through everything that happened, reminded her that she did everything she was supposed to do, and allowed her to take time for herself. At the same time, Emily looked after the rest of their patients while trying to process her own feelings on the matter. On that day, she showed how much of an outstanding nurse she is and reminded us that we are still all human and that we, as health care workers, are allowed to have strong feelings. Emily proved to be not only the nurse and caregiver the patient needed during this time but also the support system and colleague we needed.
