Our time in the hospital was filled with uncertainty and worry, but Emily turned it into a time of comfort, learning, and hope.
During our recent stay on the Oncology/Hematology 7th floor at Children's Hospital, we had the privilege of being cared for by Nurse Emily. From the moment we arrived, Emily made an unforgettable impression. She welcomed us with a warm smile (even though it was hidden under her mask, we could see it in her eyes) and a sweet ponytail tied with a ribbon. Her calm, confident demeanor immediately put us at ease, despite the intimidating sign on our door requiring full protective coverings due to pending test results.
She treated our daughter P with such care and compassion, never showing an ounce of hesitation about being close to her. That first interaction set the tone for what would become an incredibly positive experience under Emily's care. Emily had a student nurse with her throughout our stay. The two of them made us feel as though we were double-covered in attention to detail. After several emotional and exhausting hours in the ER and P, having to say goodbye to her twin sister for their first night apart, we were all overwhelmed and anxious about what lay ahead. Emily and the student nurse eased those fears. Emily took the time to show us around the room and help us settle in. She not only provided comfort to P but also extended that same reassurance to my husband and me.
Once we were settled and P was resting in bed, Emily carefully explained what was happening. She described the IVIG treatment in a way that was simple and easy to understand, so much so that even P, at 10 years old, felt comfortable and informed. Emily's ability to break down complex medical information into something clear and non-intimidating was truly a gift. Throughout our stay, Emily continued to go above and beyond.
On our day of discharge, she took the initiative to research important facts about ITP, ensuring we had all the information we needed to support P during her recovery. She provided us with detailed instructions, explained what healing would look like, and described potential concerns to watch for. Emily also taught P how to handle a nosebleed if it happened again. She delivered all this information in such a positive and encouraging way that it felt empowering, not frightening. Her approach left us feeling confident as we transitioned home.
Additionally, we had the privilege of witnessing Emily mentor the student nurse. She patiently guided her student through using the equipment in the room and allowed her to remove P's IV line under her supervision. It was a special experience to see a skilled nurse like Emily not only care for our family with such dedication but also shape and encourage a future nurse. Her ability to balance teaching and patient care with grace and expertise was inspiring. Our time in the hospital was filled with uncertainty and worry, but Emily turned it into a time of comfort, learning, and hope. Emily and the student nurse BOTH wheeled P to the front door, where P's daddy was waiting to drive her home. We left with huge hugs, well wishes all around, and hearts full of thanks.
Our doctors were amazing and we can't thank them enough. Having Emily was icing on the cake. We are so grateful for her care and believe she exemplifies everything the DAISY Award represents. Emily is not only a skilled and knowledgeable nurse but also a compassionate teacher and a source of strength for families during their most vulnerable moments. She made an indelible impact on our lives, and we are forever thankful for her kindness and dedication.
