Immediately preceding my first appointment with Emily, I had a lung function test. I had been treated for COPD for approximately four years and incurred several bronchial infections each year.
Emily's assessment was that my COPD was mild and the research she had done regarding my medical history indicated an underlying problem that periodic antibiotic coverage was not controlling.
Emily asked me about my specific symptoms and my response made her take immediate action. She stepped out of the room to read more about my symptoms. When she returned she brought along three bottles to collect sputum samples.
The preliminary lab results indicated that I had a bacterial infection, but the final lab results would take another 4-6 weeks. Emily proactively scheduled a prompt appointment with the Infectious Disease Clinic before that 4-6 week period.
Final lab results indicated a Nocardia bacterial infection. This infection can spread to the brain and spine and result in an 80% mortality rate for people with compromised health.
In addition to saving my life, Emily is pleasant and comfortable to be around. She asks probing questions and listens intently to responses. If you were as fortunate as I was, you will have made a new friend.
