I am writing to wholeheartedly recommend Nurse Emma Carson for the DAISY Award in recognition of the exceptional care she provided to my wife during a particularly challenging period of her pregnancy. Emma’s compassionate presence and unwavering advocacy played a significant role in ensuring my wife’s well-being and comfort during her hospitalization at the Labor and Delivery Unit of Riley Children’s Hospital.
My wife was admitted due to complications from preeclampsia, which required her to remain in the hospital for several weeks before delivery. Throughout this time, Emma was one of the nurses assigned to her care, and her dedication far exceeded our expectations. Her professionalism was matched only by her empathy and ability to connect with her patients on a human level.
One moment that particularly stood out to me was when the medical team discussed the option of donor breast milk for our newborn. My wife initially agreed, but Emma—drawing from her cultural awareness and experience working with patients of African descent—took the time to ensure that my wife truly understood what was being offered. She gently asked my wife to explain her understanding of “donor milk,” and upon hearing her response, realized that there had been a misunderstanding. Emma then patiently re-explained the concept in a way my wife could fully grasp. This act not only demonstrated Emma’s role as a patient educator but also underscored her commitment to informed consent and cultural sensitivity. In that moment, she embodied what it means to be a true patient advocate.
What makes Emma even more extraordinary is that her care did not end with her assigned shifts. After my wife gave birth, Emma made a special effort to visit her in the postpartum unit to check on her recovery and emotional well-being, even though she was no longer responsible for her care. That small but powerful gesture made us feel seen, cared for, and valued as individuals, not just patients.
Every nurse we encountered at Riley provided excellent care. However, the examples mentioned above illustrate how Emma Carson consistently went above and beyond her duties.
