Putting the patient at the center of everything they did, going over and above to ensure she was cared for physically, mentally, and emotionally.
I would like to nominate Emma for a DAISY due to the outstanding care, compassion, and leadership they recently demonstrated to a young child in the Emergency Department. Due to the confidential and sensitive nature it is difficult to describe in too much detail the specific event which makes it difficult to give justice to the exceptional care these 2 staff demonstrated. A young child presented with exceptionally challenging and complex needs that required the work and intervention of many services, multidisciplinary teams and required cross country and system working to solve and ensure she was placed on the correct pathway. This led to a prolonged stay withing ED whilst it was navigated. This period of time caused significant distress to the child and the staff involved in this case.

In my 30 years within healthcare, it is one of the most tragic and complex cases I have been involved in and watching the inability of all partners involved to navigate our heath and social care systems in the child’s best interests was distressing for all involved. However, throughout this episode of care, Emma demonstrated and epitomized everything that you would want from the NHS and Nursing Profession. Putting the patient at the center of everything they did, going over and above to ensure she was cared for physically, mentally, and emotionally. Not judging or changing their ethos despite the challenge and difficult situation the patient and others presented. The kindness, compassion, and leadership demonstrated were exceptional, setting an example to all others involved. She acted as an advocate for the child when all others, including those responsible, failed and refused to take responsibility or act in her best interests.

Emma epitomized and demonstrated the CARE values, demonstrated what is expected from the nursing profession, and endorse everything that the family of Patrick Barnes wants to see & acknowledge when they started the DAISY Foundation. She is truly deserving and made me exceptionally proud to be a fellow nurse- to consider them colleagues and to be their Chief Nurse.
